Growing up the daughter of two fitness professionals, Jamie Alexandra Murphy was surrounded by health and wellness. Her after-school routine consisted of doing homework at her mother's gym or participating in fitness classes. Her mother, Cathy Serif, jokes that she grew up with a silver barbell in her hand.

Now with a budding fitness career as both a personal trainer and fitness model living in New York City, Murphy is competing to become the next fitness star of Women's Health.

The magazine started the contest in January, collecting thousands of entries from women interested in starring in their upcoming fitness DVD series. Murphy, who goes by Jam, is one of the five finalists.

Originally from Ashtabula, Ohio, Murphy,26, set down roots in Rancho Mirage, but later relocated to Los Angeles and then New York City to expand her career and her brand, Body by JAM. Murphy has also collaborated with GapFit, Skechers Champion and Everlast.

Murphy is in the industry to help others.

"From encouragement, confidence is born," said Murphy in her contestant video. "And from confidence comes action and it's action that has the ability to change the world."

"She grew up around fitness," said Serif. "She credits me that I have inspired her to want to inspire others..."

Users are able to vote daily on which woman they feel best represents the Women's Health brand and should go on to create the instructional DVDs. Voting ends August 5.
